Nikola Maric, of Serbia, came to the Global Squad with the size, athleticism, and raw talent to be a scholarship player at the D-I or D-II level. The 2013 high school graduate, had two major hurdles to overcome. With the upcoming school year right around the corner Nikola was under serious time constraints to get recruited. Also most college basketball programs had already given out their scholarships for 2013.
Despite these major obstacles, the Global Squad staff looked intensively for available scholarships. Nikola, in the meantime, got to work playing ball and showing off his abilities. Right from the start Nikola caught the interest of coaches. Several D-I and D-II programs wanted Nikola but only had scholarships available for 2014.
As the Global Squad came to an end, a scholarship was still lacking. It looked as though Nikola might have to return to Serbia and then take one of the 2014 scholarship offers.
The situation changed quickly when a D-II school, Southwest Missouri Baptist University, saw some game film and decided to make an offer. Nikola made the decision this past Friday to join the Southwest Missouri Bearcats and take the basketball scholarship. He will begin his freshmen year this September with an opportunity to contribute to the team immediately. Head Coach Jeff Guiot said he’s excited to add an athletic and versatile forward to the roster.
The Global Squad staff will be keeping an eye on Nikola’s career. After an impressive summer, we expect Nikola to be a fantastic player at the D-II level.
