Global Squad alum, Oliver Xu just completed an incredible senior season at Hong Kong International School (HKIS). He helped lead HKIS to a 21-3 record, averaged 25 points, 7 assists, and 6 rebounds per game.
These gaudy stats, combined with the Global Squad exposure, resulted in several great opportunities for Oliver. Sarah Lawrence College, Lynchburg College, Hun School of Princeton, Mt. Zion, and Millbrook Prep all recruited the 6’3 point guard out of Hong Kong.
After much consideration, Oliver chose to accept a spot on the Rice University basketball team as a “walk on”. He will join the team for the 2014-15 academic school year. Rice University is in the midst of changing their entire men’s basketball coaching staff. This offers Oliver an opportunity to fight for playing time and potentially earn a scholarship in his sophomore season.
The new assistant coach at Rice, John David Byers said,”With the basketball program going through a transition, we’re going to need contributions from everyone. Oliver’s size at the point guard position is very attractive and he’ll get a chance.”
After two seasons with the Global Squad, Oliver showed the potential to develop into an excellent player at the next level. He improved dramatically each year and it all culminated in his final game as a member of the Gold Dragons (B). He tallied 12 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists, and 1 steal vs HHoops.
The Global Squad staff is extremely excited for Oliver Xu. He’s gotten one step closer to reaching his goal of playing NCAA D-I basketball at Rice University. Congratulations to Oliver and the entire Xu family.
